Lymphoedema Treatment and Therapy

What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic swelling (oedema) usually in the arm(s) or leg(s). It can also occur in other parts of the body due to an accumulation of lymphatic fluid.

The accumulation of the lymphatic fluid is usually due to a problem in the lymphatic system. Issues with the lymphatic system can be due to surgery, injuries, radiation therapy or genetics.

A badly swollen limb may result in loss of mobility, discomfort and pain. Coping with everyday activities may become difficult and affect the quality do life.

Treatment is available to assist to manage this condition.

Treatments Available at RPPR for Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema can be managed and the swelling decreased by a program which may include a combination of specialised lymphatic massage, correct bandaging, compression garments, an exercise routine and skin care. This is known as Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT). This treatment is also known as Complex Decongestive Therapy (CDT) or Complex Physical Therapy (CPT)

Complex Lymphatic Treatment

Complex Lymphatic Therapy (CLT) includes all of the following components:

• Manual Lymphatic Drainage
• Bandaging
• Containment Garments - Measurement/Supply
• Education of the condition of Lymphoedema
• Lymphoedema Self–management
• Skin Care Advice
• Exercise/Prescription

Clinical treatment in aimed at reducing the swelling and educating the patient and family in these special skills so that the patient can control swelling.

CLT treatment has a strong education component to teach clients and carers how to best manage their conditions.

RPPR CLT treatment can occur at our Robina rooms, or in your own home if needed.

Complex Lymphatic Therapy Subsidies

Lymphoedema is classified as chronic condition, therefore you may be eligible for a treatment subsidy through Medicare. This is called an Enhanced Primary Care Plan and needs to be arranged through your GP.
RPPR Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy is covered for eligible DVA and Workcover clients. It is partly subsidised by most health care funds.

Cancellation Policy

In the event of a cancellation, 24 hours notice is required.  Please phone or text 24 hours prior to your appointment - 0450 468 944 (or 5562 2088 during office hours).  This way we can re-allocate your appointment and reschedule our staff. 
Emergency situations will be considered on a case by case basis and credit may be provided at our discretion.
